You'll generally only find "good" curb cuts where the sidewalks were redone less than 10 years ago. This is true even though "best practice" advice for accessible sidewalks and crosswalks dates to 1961 or earlier.

Some cities, and the California state government, are still trying to evade the ADA requirements:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-10-25-sidewalks_N.htm

Philly has actually been behaving itself since the Sacramento case, but practically all of Philly's sidewalks were last repaired long, long before 2003.

--NathanaelAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7280277691673459003.post-8118253390816294202012-04-17T19:14:28.752-07:002012-04-17T19:14:28.752-07:00Nope, all I got to see is what you see in the pict...Nope, all I got to see is what you see in the pictures, here and in part 2. Be lucky you never tried to drive on Lincoln or Kelly Drives--35 mph-signed roads treated like Interstates.

I'm a little surprised that your impressions are those of a quiet city. The parts of town you were in are usually extremely busy. Did you have a chance to visit some of the outlying neighborhoods? Northern Liberties, Fairmount, Passyunk Square? Manayunk, with its old world charm? Roxborough? East Falls? Victorian-era Chestnut Hill? Mt. Airy? Southwest Center City, with its oodles of brand-new housing? Some of the older settlements on the Main Line? Most of those places are a subway or train ride away.

BTW the reason the 11th St. El stop is so quiet at 9:30 is because Market East closes down around 8:00. It's stupid and the absolute worst way to entice shoppers to what is supposed to be your main street.

I wish you'd told me you were coming to town. There was almost no wait at any traffic light, so I couldnt see a reason for road rage and such.James Sinclairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00948509061118072998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7280277691673459003.post-22217244755375281402012-04-14T06:25:21.950-07:002012-04-14T06:25:21.950-07:00Glad you enjoyed your visit, nicely documented. You mention about the drivers, last summer a guy bike toured all the major league baseball stadiums across the country, thousands of miles and never had a problem until he got to the city of brotherly love. He was hit but only a glancing blow.
